The advertising and print world is not changing that much. We still have magazines, and they're almost all 8.375x10.875 trim-size. They are targeted to specific cultural groups, and we still read them.
How important is print advertising in this world of twitter and facebook?
I'm gonna break it to you gently. Twitter and facebook are worthless for advertising, but if you want to hear some ridiculous statements by important celebrities they are fantastic. Show me a manufacturer who thinks his new product introductions should be on facebook and I'll show you someone making a fool of themselves. People don't care about advertising enough to watch it on TV, much less in their personal social media time.
The consumer is surrounded by advertising, do you need to throw it at them along with their daughter's birthday pictures, young puppies, the Favres and Weiners? We find print advertising a cost-effective solution to drive people to your business and your website!
Target your group realistically
Target the group you want in your store or business, and make sure they can use your product. Don't try to attract the ultra-wealthy to shop in your second-hand store.
Show your product
The product or service must look good and appealing. Just because you have that new phone camera and you are very hip, it doesn't mean it is enough for the demands of high-end magazine printing. If your product is red, make sure the ad prints red! Our long time friends, Robert and Janice Jackson, former owners of 'Simply Southwest', felt color correctnes in their clothing catalogs was the most important and challenging issue for their catalogs and advertising. If it was wrong in the catalog, this meant increased returns.
The important thing about 'downstream marketing' is don't go 'upstream'. Some of your best client prospecting may be simply referrals, or your product looks good next to that new car, or someone just mispells a word in their browser. To bring this concept a little closer to what I am trying to say, is don't clip your product wings by promoting it as a nitch product, to a nitch market. Open it up a little in the presentaion.
Make your product available
Have the resources together to fill an order. Have your workflow in place. Answer every email and every query. Have those widgets ready to ship.
Models may not be appropriate for every campaign or product, but look at any magazine and you see how important models are for product promotion. Choose carefully, because the wrong model could be disastrous.
Easy to see products, and easy to understand presentation. I don't know how many times I've seen 'edgy' advertising that does not present the product in a fashion that communicates.
Quality not Quantity
Sometimes we have clients who may not have the resources for a large ad. They may have a half-page horizontal format budget, with a twenty page catalog attitude. Then they'll arrive at our studio with a truck-load of six foot bronzes of animals, flat reproductions of famous paintings, and ten pieces of jewelry. This just doesn't work!
Then... GET READY FOR THE RESPONSES!
